5. What is it made of?

Commercial unit:

Frame: Schedule 40, 304L stainless steel pipe and 11gauge 304L stainless steel fabricated components are welded together. The frame is primer coated THEN powder coated.

Subdeck: 11 gauge 304L stainless steel, which is not coated.

Deck board:  Anti-skid HDPE marine board. This board is made for boats, so it is designed to be slip proof when wet. Also designed to endure UV rays.

Side panels: ABS material (UV resistant and impact/scuff resistant). Similar material is used in most modern vehicle bumpers.

Valve: bronze/brass.

Fasteners, springs and bushings are either stainless steel or high grade rubbers or polymers, which experts have said will endure for years in the beach environment.

Side panels are screen printed. Custom designs and logos possible for outside panels.

Residential unit:

Deck board is same marine board used in commercial units. Remaining materials are all high grade polymers which are UV resistant. Arches are 3/4″ schedule 80 furniture grade PVC pipe. Fasteners are stainless steel. Valve is bronze/brass and is identical to the tried and true valve used in the commercial units. The HDPE injected molded base has a network of 1/8" supporting ribs, which make it VERY STRONG.

6. How does it work?

Water pressure: Both units work off standard municipal water pressure (45-60psi). No electricity required. Note: If water pressure greatly exceeds 60psi, a pressure reducer may be required for proper performance. If pressure is much less than 45psi, unit may not have sufficient spray.

Connection: Can be hard plumbed (PVC, copper, etc.) to a standard 1/2″ water supply line or can simply be hooked up to a garden hose.

Activation: Units have a water valve underneath the platform. When someone steps onto the platform, the valve stem is depressed allowing water to flow inside the arched pipes. There are five nozzles on each arched pipe which are angled (by computer design) to efficiently wash the lower legs and feet of users.

Deactivation: Once clean, the user simply steps off and the platform springs up to automatically to cut off the valve and, thus, the water spray.

7. Where does the sand go?

The platform is slightly curved so that most of the sand drains to the outside edges. Much like the result of using hoses or shower heads, the sand stays where it falls. If there isn’t much traffic, the sand may dry up and blow away. If there is substantial traffic, some clean up will be required just as is currently the case. We recommend that sand is periodically washed from underneath the unit as well. The best situation would be to mount the Surf Splash on a raised deck over a fiberglass grate so the sand would fall underneath.

8. Where is it made?

Most of the components are purchased from various suppliers in the United States and assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee at the headquarters of Surf Splash.

9. Can it be secured?

Commercial unit:

The base has four holes (at the corners) to secure the unit to a hard surface using appropriate fasteners (included). Since the fasteners are hidden behind the side panels, no one would know how the unit is secured. A thief would have to disassemble the unit just to find out how it’s secured. This makes the Surf Splash virtually theft proof when properly secured.

10. How much weight does it take to activate the unit?

About 20-30 pounds (depending upon the water pressure of your supply line, so even the smallest child can use it.

11. What maintenance does it require?

Essentially none for the unit itself, except perhaps occasional cleaning and insuring that the nozzles remain unclogged. However, some sand clean up around the unit will likely be required. Probably, this will not exceed the clean up currently required in the outdoor shower areas. Also, sand should be periodically washed from underneath the unit to prevent build up.

12. How much water does it use?

The Surf Splash uses about one gallon of water compared to 2-3 gallons for a shower head and 4 or more gallons for a garden hose to do the same job. The Surf Splash is also about 4 times faster, taking about 10-15 seconds to effectively wash all the sand from a user’s lower legs and feet.

13. What about the 400 lb weight limit?

It is designed to withstand greater weight, but there has to be a limit for warranty purposes.

14. Can customers get a custom logo for the outside panels?

Commercial unit:

We gladly offer estimates . The cost will depend on the logo design (complexity and colors), or we can provide panels which are blank on the outside and a customer can have this outsourced elsewhere.
